Why We Must All Watch “The Boys”
This article may contain spoilers. Also, I am sad that I must wait another whole year for Season 3!
- Over the top, non-sensical gore
There are exploding heads of Congressional and government leaders ! Not that I condone this, but damn! How often do we get to see this through fake CSPAN?
- Anthony Starr plays Homelander
This brilliant, talented, New Zealand actor plays the most unlovable/sociopathic/two-faced/manipulative/villainous/ heroic/ weirdo/ creepy thing ever. Can I be more descriptive? Sure, but that would be another article I cannot bring myself to write.
- Social media and manipulation
With super heroes basically playing God for the most powerful corporation in the world, it’s gotta upset..or terrify..a few people. Haters will hate. In order to combat the haters, Stormfront utilizes her social media influence to enrage the public and use memes to hide Homelander’s horrifying nature. We see frightening parallels to our own reality here. Social media and public opinions, sound familiar?
- Vought International owns EVERYTHING!
In the show, it is humorous to see Billy Butcher nurse his wounded head with a bag of frozen peas. A bag of frozen peas with a picture of Homelander standing with all of his glory. These are just few examples of how the mighty 7 are public figures on steroids. Vought can be compared to companies like Johnson & Johnson, Coca Cola and Pfizer. I mean, in real life, do these companies not pretty much own everything?
- Racial Inequality
I do not think I have to explain this too much here, but “The Boys” can easily be a tale of “being born in the right skin”. For an example, in the real world, we see police officers shooting people for being black. In the show, we see Stormfront wanting to push her agenda of creating Nazi-Laboratory -Generated/ Super-Terrorists (Wow, that is a mouthful). She sees people of non-whites and black people as “lesser”. There is even a scene where she beats a man to death because she feels contempt. She cannot accept that black people are people too. Just like some police officers, Stormfront abuses her powers.
- We are all lonely and lacking purpose in some ways
*Hugh bonds with the “Boys” + scary/badass/quiet Japanese girl.
*Homelander quite literally has “mommy” issues.
*Butcher goes on a murderous quest to find his wife.
*Starlight feels like a stranger in her Christian bubble.
*Deep kills every marine wild life he tries to save .
…this can go on and on…
What do any of these things have to do with us? I think it shows that all of us want to do something meaningful or find someone meaningful in our lives. The terrible consequence of life is that our approaches to finding purpose in general does not always work. When it does eventually, it is all worth it in the end. Even if the journey is embarrassing, painful, depressing, traumatizing or even homicidal in some cases.
